There’s a wealth of history and nature, and plenty to do for all the family. Keep reading to find out more…
There is history everywhere
One of Caerphilly’s most well-known features is the biggest castle in Wales, Caerphilly Castle, which covers over 30 acres in total. It adds a great historical legacy to the town and allows for great exploration on the weekend. Constructed in 1268, the castle has seen much renovation since then, and it has some surprisingly odd features. Whilst most know the Leaning Tower of Pisa to be the post peculiarly-angled architecture, Caerphilly Castle’s south-east tower is even wonkier and is one of the castle’s biggest attractions.
Another of the town’s historic legacies is the cheddary, crumbly cheese that is Caerphilly, which was first made in 1830. It was said that the cheese was made specially for coal-miners as its hard texture made it easy to eat, and the salty curd was great for replenishing minerals. Every year, the Big Cheese Event takes place in and around the castle, with the Great Cheese Race, spectacular fireworks and live music; it’s popular with the locals.
There is fun for all the family
A short drive away lies the beautiful forest that is Cwmcarn, where you’ll feel a million miles away from city life. Sprawling with vast forest space and greenery, Cwmcarn is perfect for a weekend walk, mountain bike, forest drive or outdoor adventure. With lots of different trails and activities, it’s the perfect place to take the whole family.
Discover the hidden history of Caerphilly at Winding House, built on an old colliery site. You can explore the Victorian winding machine and be enamoured by the latest exhibitions on show. If you and your family love activities, there’s horse-riding, indoor climbing, hiking, kayaking and lots more on offer.
Caerphilly Farmers and Artisan Market is held at the Twyn Community Centre on the second Saturday of each month. The market features a wealth of handcrafted gifts, homemade food and local businesses. Need a new weekly tradition in your family? Make it the Caerphilly Market on a Saturday morning.
Aberbargoed and Caerphilly town centres offer endless enjoyment, from cider tastings, spa days and shopping. Blaengawney Farm & Hallets Cider offer food and cider tasting sessions and a look around the farm. There’s Bryn Meadows Spa near Ystrad Mynach, which won Wales’ Spa of the Year award in 2017. All around Caerphilly, you will also find an abundance of restaurants, bars, cafes and coffee shops to indulge in.
Find the right school for you and your child
Aberbargoed is a great location for Primary Schools; and five are within walking distance. These include Ysgol Bro Sannan, Gilfach Fargoed, Ysgol Gymraeg Gilfach Fargoed, Cefn Forest and Park Primary. There are 7 secondary schools in the area, the closest two being Lewis School Pengam and Blackwood Comprehensive School, both English medium and within walking distance. Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni is the nearest Welsh medium school, a short 8-minute drive from the Bedwellty Fields development. Trinity Fields Special School is just a 12-minute drive away also.
